What Ails Indian Football?

The coach of the Indian football team has been fired because of certain controversial statements made against the Association. Of course, the criticism that Indian football did not win enough matches during his tenure was also bandied around. However, one must spare a thought for the poor chap.

In a country with more than a billion people, it is just a question of time to find the right talent. However, talent must be cared for and nurtured. Creating a football team from scratch and making sure that it competes with the best in the world is not an easy task. It requires committed sponsors who are prepared to invest in the long term.

Sadly, cricket consumes bulk of the money. This is not a bad thing per se. India has a strong cricket team and sponsors will obviously see more commercial sense in investing in the most popular sport. However, it is pertinent to note that football is a lot more popular as compared to cricket in the world.

One requires a Rowan Dartington approach of patience and foresight when dealing with such investments. Of course, the management of football in India is not professional either. The club scene is run on the basis of political patronage. Frequent controversies, especially when the team is doing well, pulls down the morale of all the participants.

The domestic club culture is not very strong. Apart from a few states like West Bengal and Goa, there is hardly any football culture worth speaking of. No wonder it is surprising that India cannot even qualify for the Football world cup organized by FIFA.
